  An MOV or a wire are both limited by an ability to transfer (carry,
divert) power.  One parameter that measures this ability is joules -
how much power gets dissipated while transfering power.  No wire or
MOV is a perfect conductor.  Power is limited by the tiny energy
absorbed while transfering massive power.  Wire does power transfer
without degradation.  But MOVs do degrade (and must not va****ize).
Therefore that power multipled by time (degradation) is how MOV energy
diversion (transfer) is measured.  This was also explained to
fl_fly_boy in 2007.

Then why even bother trying to protect?   Real numbers.  A 100 joule
MOV will conduct up to 2000 amps without damage (numbers from
manufacturer datasheets).  100 of those surge joules may be absorbed
by that MOV - while operating like a wire.  Another 5000 joules are
dissipated where?  In earth.   According to fl_fly_boy, a trivial few
hundred joules in a plug-in protector will absorb (stop) a direct
lightning strikes?  How do so few joules somehow stop (absorb) what 3
miles of sky could not?  fl_fly_boy claims hundreds of joules will
stop (absorb) how many megajoules of lightning?  fl_fly_boy simply
demonstrates how half facts (from a Wikipedia citation) create junk
science.

  When propeerly earthed, MOV joules may transfer ('divert' according
the NIST) maybe 50 times more energy into earth.  Where is energy
dissipated?  fl_fly_boy says inside a protector.  Responsible sources
say in earth.  An effective protector diverts surges to be dissipated
in earth.

  How much would a 1000 joule 'whole house' protector absorb during
that same 2000 amp surge?  About 75 joules.  A properly sized
protector means even less energy is dissipiated inside the protector
AND more energy is dissipate in earth.  How do we increase protection
- get more evergy dissipated in earth?  We use protectors with even
high joules ratings (and ignore the same myths that fl_fly_boy posted
back in 2007).

  Once we provide facts that fl_fly_boy forgets, then the proector is
only as effective as its earth ground.  Does the 100 joule protector
stop 100 joules?  Earth it to dissipate 5000 joules inside earth.
fl_fly_boy ignored the seicen in 2007 and forgets it again.  No wonder
he recommends plug-in protectors.  He has a half fact.  Now he is an
expert.

  Why does cable for that HDTV first get earthed before entering a
building.  That earthing wire has such high 'joules' as to dissipate
tens of thousands of surge amps into earth and without MOVs.
