Joules can measure energy dissipated, energy transferred, or energy
stored.  Because an MOV is rated in joules, that proves MOVs only
absorb energy?  Yes, according to fl_fly_boy.  No, according to
reality.

  A 100 joule MOV, properly earthed, may "simply divert it to ground,
where it can do no harm" (as stated by NIST but contradicted by
fl_fly_boy and others).  Ballpark numbers: 5000 joules were dissipated
in earth because 5000 joules were transferred by an MOV rated to only
absorb 100 joules.

  This ability to transfer (divert, clamp, connect, conduct) so much
energy while absorbing so little is why MOVs are popular protector
components.   They conduct - are not the mythical energy absorbers.
Of course, anyone with basic electrical knowledge can read those
datasheets to grasp this.  Apparently fl_fly_boy needs it explained in
Dr. Seuss language.

  A 100 joule MOV conducting 2000 amperes will absorb about 100 joules
- trivial energy (a kilowatt hour is 3.6 million joules).  We install
a ten times larger (1000 joule 'whole house') protector so that a less
75 joules is absorbed.  As a protector's joules rating increases, then
the energy absorbed decreases.

  As a protector's joules rating increases, it becomes more
conductive.  As a protector's joules rating increases, then its life
expectancy increases exponentially.  All these made obvious in
datasheets.

  fl_fly_boy does not have the education to read datasheets.  So
again, he posts derision rather than facts.

  I do not expect fl_fly_boy to grasp what he refused to understand in
2007.  Teaching him is not the point.  fl_fly_boy demonstrates the
technical knowledge of those who recommend plug-in protectors.  He
repeatedly *assumes* how a protector works only because he saw the
word joules.  He *assumes* joules only measure absorbed energy.
Misquoting sources makes him an expert.  How curious.  Rush Limbaugh
also does this.  Others should recognize the half truths found in
fl_fly_boy's posts.  But then he insults.  That also implies he is
promoting a scam.

  How to get a protector to absorb less energy?  More joules.
Therefore the protector has a longer life expectancy.  More joules -
using all its joules during every surge - is why the properly sized
'whole house' protector earths direct lightning strikes - and remains
functional.  Grossly undersized plug-in protectors also are reason to
worry about these 'scary pictures':
