High-definition television will be seen in 44 million households worldwide
by the end of this year, according to a new forecast by Informa Telecoms &
Media.
4% of households around the world will actively watch HDTV programming by
the end of 2008, doubling from 2% at the end of 2007.
“A major contributing factor is that set and set-top box prices have
fallen
substantially in the last two years,” commented Informa’s principal
media
analyst, Simon Murray.
So far, HDTV uptake has been highest in North America, partly because of
lower-priced equipment and a wider array of content, but “also because
the
picture and audio quality of standard definition (SD) programming is
relatively poor,” according to Murray’s statement.
“Digital platforms now use HD channel provision as a differentiator
against
their competitors,” Murray explained, noting that once 20
high-definition
channels are available, HDTV subscriptions tend to rise substantially.
By the end of 2012, Informa expects than 179 million homes will receive
HDTV
programming, accounting for 16% of households worldwide.
