Here is an email I sent to someone I plan (or planned) to have to a
professional calibration of my new Sony XBR4:
The Sony tech was here and said there is nothing wrong with my set. The
"blotchy" back light is normal according to him.
I then showed him content of varying quality, some with lousy gradation.
He said that was lousy source, and even some Blueray DVDs are not good
source. He added if it were the set, all source would look bad.
He was not a particularly trustworthy sort of guy.
He said they get these complaints a lot because the set, unlike my
previous set, is so much more detailed that it will make bad source more
noticeable than my old set.
We then got on the subject of professional calibration and he said it
was a complete waste of money; that Sony calibrates the set just fine at
the factory. He added that some outside calibration techs go into the
service menu. He said that would void my warranty.
He then added, "If you have an outside calibration tech look at your
set, get him to put it in writing that the set was out of calibration
and have him sign it. I will make sure it gets to Sony engineering."
Do you go into the service menu?
Will your re****t include the fact the set was not properly calibrated by
Sony, if such is the case?
////end of email ////
The Sony tech stated that they joke about professional calibrations all
the time, that they laugh at places like Best Buy, because the customer
is being totally ripped off.
What say you professional calibration folks?
