| LOL Thats funny. You get a Dish 1000, which has three lnbs.
| One cable runs from the dish to the reciever, where it is split
| into two cables, one for each satellite input. Then you connect your
OTA
| antenna, and do a channel scan.
| All switching is totally, completely automatic, in any combination. So
all
| your channels, both OTA digital and from satellite appear seamlessly in
the
| program guide. To get program info for your local OTA channels, you
have to
| subscribe to
| the locals package from DN. If you have low power analog
| stations, they should be included in the locals package from DN.
DN provides NO locals here, even though they DO have the locals I get
on the bird. The problem is, I live in a different DMA. Until digital,
I could not get my in-DMA (159) channels at all, OTA. But I can get DMA
22 (Pittsburgh) locals. But DN interprets the law as not allowing them
to provide those channels to me, even though Comcast does (both DMAs).
WTOV-DT temporarily on channel 57 does come in just fine. The fact that
they are switching back to channel 9 post-transition worries me since the
analog signal on channel 9 is virtually non-existant (I can see sync bars
floating around in the snow when using an older TV that won't black out
or blue out on lack of signal). WTRF (TV and DT) and WOUC (TV and DT)
are both also unreceivable (WTRF-DT is temporarily on channel 32 and not
built to full power, so that may explain that). Ironically I can get
WVTX-CA on channel 28 and even W41AA enough to sync up and show very
snowy color.
I live on the east side of a hill. Apparently UHF is knife-edging down
at me better than VHF is doing. My best prespects for getting OTA is
in the northeast direction (Pittsburgh, DMA #22). Most of those stations
already come in enough to sync up on rabbit ears, with WPGH-TV on channel
53 actually watchable (WPGH-DT on channel 43 is absent, still).
So I'm working on getting a mounting system to do tests with a CM-4228.
Since the CM-4228 needs 1.25 inch mast and all I have right now is 2.00
inch mast, I need to convert. I found a place that has a step-down, but
haven't gone to pick it up, yet. Then I'll order a CM-4228 and see what
it brings in. If it works well enough on the portable mount, then I'll
commit to a more permanent mount in a concrete base. If that works, then
I will look at dropping Comcast and going with DishNET and FTA.

| So if they have satellites up there, but you arent in their footprint,
you
| want a tuner for those satellites anyway?
| You lost me on that one.
I am in the footprint. I don't recall ever saying I'm not. The problem
is the stations that I am "supposed" to receive (even though I cannot over
the air) are not on either DN or DT birds at all. I am in the footprint
of the beam that carries Pittsburgh, Cleveland, and some other cities in
Ohio and West Virginia. It's just that they won't allow me to get any of
those. Even though I'm *effectively* in DMA 22 (based one what I can get
with an antenna), I'm *legally* in DMA 159.
An _illegal_ option is to get a cracked receiver ... then I could get ALL
the locals in the L-L beam footprint, plus the NY/LA ones.
I'd like to see Congress fix their broken law regarding reception of local
TV over satellite. Some have argued it is not broken, but none have even
come close to anything near resembling a valid argument in support of
that.
