|  You have that backwards. VHF propagates better over the horizon that
UHF.

That is my understanding as well. Perhaps he was referring to true line of

sight.  The horizon comes into play after about 20 miles
As I recall most DXing Ham radio guys stick to around  10-20 meters-- or
at 
least the lower bands. CB is 11 meters and I used to get SSB transmissions

from Italy (10 watts RMS).  Of course in that case--"skip" was the key 
factor--again not line of sight

I also don't understand the viable transmission limits mentioned.
I used to live in Westport, CT and we got everything NY and Hartford could

throw at us with great quality.
Westport is about 50 miles from NY as the crow flies  and we only had a 
dinky yagi in our attic--no preamp.
