More directionality of the antenna means more gain in the desired
direction
and less noise from undesired directions.  Height improves what you can
get
in almost all situations.  A good low noise pre-amp can compensate for the
noise a cheaper TV tuner may have, and help overcome losses on the
feedline.
A proper antenna installation can get TV reliably beyond 100 miles.  YMMV.
