But what Ed didn't say was whether his display is receiving an OTA 
signal or cable/sat signal.

My own presumption is he's not receiving OTA because if it was, it would 
show it.

It's im****tant to remember that just because an OTA is HD, the cable/sat 
equivalent may not be - especially in the case of PBS.  In Dallas, KERA 
(like the other major network broadcasters) offers 1080i HD in prime 
time OTA, but while the local channel package from DishTV offers the 
other HD locals, KERA is not listed in the HD channel lineup - only the 
SD equivalent is provided.

I think that is what Ed is experiencing.
