I'm sure it depends upon the individual TV.  I had purchased the
Sony upconverting player about six months prior to getting an HDTV.
I forgot about the HDMI cable, which was still in the box, and tried
connecting with both component video cables and S-Video.  Both
looked like crap on the Sharp LC52D82U.  The player upconverted
signal over HDMI was good enough where I was no longer tempted
to buy one of the HD players, especially in light of what I read in this

Of course, there are people who will passionately argue otherwise,
but considering my viewing distance, I decided that the upconverted
picture was good enough for me.
