I was in the antenna business in the late '40's and can confirm that
the emissions from a typical chimney will eventualy destroy the
antenna (takes many years) as they will your lungs if you inhale those
fumes. I can also state that the chimney mount will sooner or later
destroy the chimney. However, it was the most popular mount as it was
quick, cheap, and easy and there were no holes in the roof on most
homes to worry about.
