Well, I was thinking more along the lines of an MP3 based disk, but maybe
with something other than actual MP3 files on there, like maybe WAV, OGG,
or FLAC (a lossless audio file format).

My father's DVD player will play a data CD with MP3 files on it.  It
clearly
has to be accessing it as a data CD in ISO format to do that.  But if I
put
the same MP3 files in either the original ISO format as used on a CD, or
the
new ISO format intended for larger capacity for DVDs (that video DVDs
use),
it doesn't recognize either.  It has to have the ability to understand a
bunch of MP3 files since it can do it on a CD.  It has to have the ability
to understand the DVD ISO format since it can do video DVDs.  But it just
can't seem to put the two concepts together and play a DVD of MP3 files.

I really smart player would understand CDs, DVDs, including dual layer,
the two ISO data filesystem formats, at least MP3 and WAV file formats
(including OGG and FLAC would not involve new royalty costs so those are
effective free), and just do the right thing with whatever it gets.  If
the media contaings a bunch of BMP, GIF, JPEG, or PNG files, it should do
a slide show, too.

This is not hard to program.  Each extra format would, of course, need to
have some new code to recognize and sup****t it.  But making it all work
together is not that hard.

Sup****ting DVD-A and SACD is at least a start.  I did at least one time
have
the ears to tell the difference between CD and high end analog vinyl where
the latter sounded more real.  Maybe these days I don't anymore.  I
haven't
tried in a while (my vinyl is all gone and I have nothing to play it on).
