| I doubt your local stations would want you to get nearby
| locals if they allow you to get ones other than theirs.
| Besides, I am not convinced that Directv could give you
| Pittsburgh if they wanted to, although I have not looked
| at the options myself.
The stations that are in my DMA are snowy on analog and unreliable on
digital
due to being separated by a hill. The distant stations are receivable due
to
the side of the hill I am on facing in that direction (east). It would
require
quite an excessive antenna height to get them.
The FCC maintains a list of "significantly viewed stations". However,
they
only detail it by county. If they were to detail it to the street level
and
not include stations provided by cable, then channels 7 and 9 would not be
in the list for my location. Nevertheless, they do include Pittsburgh
stations
in that list as it is for my whole county.
I looked at the spot beam patterns, and the channel list by beam, and I am
in
the one that serves stations ranging from Pittsburgh to Cleveland to
Cincinnati
to Charleston WV. So I already know it is technically possible to get
them.
What I inquired about with both DBS companies is what stations I would get
if
I had the letters from the TV stations they think I should get, giving
approval
to have distant locals delivered. They told me they could only give me
NYC and
LA (both, in fact). I asked about Pittsburgh and they said they do not
deliver
out of areas locals other than NYC or LA.
Channels 7 and 9 are not relayed by satellite at all. If they were, they
would
still not deliver Pittsburgh simultaneously even those Comcast does
(channels
2, 4, 11, and 13 from Pittsburgh are on Comcast).
If they would provide Pittsburgh then I would pursue obtaining those
letters.
The fact that they refuse to deliver Pittsburgh under any cir***stances is
why
my finger of blame points at them ... both of them.
So my only option is to put up an antenna to get the stations from
Pittsburgh
over the air. I could get 7 and 9 with additional antennas up higher, but
I
would choose not to do so. To get Pittsburgh, the antenna won't even need
to
be above the roofline because of the broad eastward view I have; it can be
on
the side of the house (a "flat" bow-tie like the CM-4228 would be fine on
the
side of a wall).
Of course there is the illegal option of acquiring a hacked receiver and
just
watching all the locals carried on both beams. Someone here suggested
signing
up with DBS using an address located in nearby PA. That would also be
illegal.
My plans right now are to put up the OTA antenna and explore FTA options.
If
I go with FTA I'll see if that satisifies my limited TV viewing desires
before
going with either of the DBS providers, or expanding my Comcast (currently
is
basic service, which gets me TV from Pittsburgh in SD analog).
